We’re often so focused on how to make our income last longer that we spend less time working on ways to live longer. A large, multiyear study of seniors recently reported its findings on the lifestyle elements people can modify to promote a longer lifespan. Specifically, seniors who optimize four or more of the following healthy behaviors reduce the chance of experiencing heart failure by half:

  1. Walk briskly at a pace of 2 miles per hour or faster
  2. Choose leisure time activities that are relatively active
  3. Drink alcohol in moderation (no more than 1 to 2 drinks a day)
  4. Do not smoke
  5. Avoid obesity

Interestingly, the research found no relationship between heart failure and the dietary patterns that were studied, and exercise intensity was deemed substantially less important than walking pace and active leisure.4
